Currently the City of Plano has us on standby as an emergency evacuee shelter. As of Monday afternoon (August 28) the number of evacuees has doubled and there is likelihood that we will be asked to open our church to 100 Harvey evacuees. We are coordinating with a number of governmental and church agencies to stay abreast of all the facts and to be prepared to serve in any way we are needed.
Many of you remember the remarkable ministry provided when we created Hotel Katrina in 2005. We have experienced team members from Hotel Katrina who are already poised and ready to build the infrastructure necessary for Hotel Harvey: housing, food services, laundry services, social services, and hospitality. This will require over 100 volunteers and monetary donations if we are called upon. We will keep you updated on the status as we know more.
If you wish to be added to our volunteer standby list for Hotel Harvey, please fill out the information below and we will notify you if we go into action:
HOW YOU CAN HELP NOW
- We are collecting monetary donations for hurricane relief. You can give online at cumc.com/give or make donations to Christ United with a note that the funds are designated for hurricane relief.
- This Sunday, September 3, you will see our Youth at the North and South entrances selling lemonade and collecting cash donations for the Harvey relief effort.
- Our Youth will be assembling Flood Buckets and Health Kits this Sunday. If you or your small group is interested in learning how you can assemble flood buckets or health kits, go to: umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies.
- Christ United’s Disaster Response Team (DRT), will likely be called to the Houston area sometime in the next few weeks to assist with clean-up. We will have DRT volunteers at the North and South entrances this Sunday to let you know how you can help. If you are interested in learning more about DRT, go to: cumc.com/drt.
