Project Hope Tutoring

The Project Hope Tutoring Program provides tutoring for the children of the families who are involved with Project Hope Coaching. Tutors focus on academic tools such as good study habits, organizational skills, time management, and improving their grades by sharing their own knowledge and talents. Academic needs are tailored and enriched for each student in K-12. The students, families, and tutors work collaboratively once a week through flexible sessions; virtual or in-person. Personal goals are set for the student to ensure their success in school. Our hope is that by providing academic tutoring and encouraging personal goal setting, students will develop a love of learning in order to be successful in school and in life.

PISD Partnerships

Our goal for partnering with these schools is to provide positive public relations and community attitude towards the educational system, modeling positive adult role models, offering individualized and personal attention for students, offering active support for quality education, and improving student achievement, attitude, and behavior.

Dooley Elementary

Christ United partners with Dooley Elementary (PISD) by offering:

  • Tutoring/mentoring – our volunteers provide one-on-one mentoring (on-site or virtually) throughout the year for children who have been identified by the school as “at-risk” (grades K-5th).
  • ESL Classes – Classes are offered to families of students that attend Dooley Elementary. Participants are provided with the required materials and work on learning and understanding the English language. There are over 13 different languages spoken within the families at Dooley.
  • The Dooley Holiday Market Place – Christ United collects new and gently used items to be used in a “store” created for students to shop with Dooley Dollars that they have earned during the semester. Donations can include items such as coffee cups, puzzles, coloring books, books, trinkets, The students can purchase holiday gifts and even have them gift wrapped. Items are dropped in the atrium in appropriately marked boxes. Volunteers help sort, deliver, set-up, gift wrap, and “work” the market.
  • Support- Christ United supports students and teachers by donating school supplies and providing teacher appreciation gifts throughout the year.

Volunteering as a Tutor or Substitute Tutor

This program is successful because of our amazing tutors. Tutors are needed in different capacities and sessions are tailored to fit each child. We offer flexible opportunities virtually or in-person. If you cannot commit to teaching on a consecutive basis, please consider being a substitute.

School Supply Donations

The Project Hope Tutoring program stockpiles school supplies for “Giveaway Days” when students can choose items they need to succeed. This includes calendars, pocket folders, spiral notebooks, 3-hole notebook paper, pencils, pens, and backpacks. New and gently-used items are acceptable.

Drop these items off at any time at the Welcome Desk.

Donate Books

New and gently-used books are amazing donations for our young readers. Sometimes we add the books to our resource library for students and tutors to read together on Sunday afternoons. These are also available as a choice on “Giveaway Day,” so that children can take a book home to keep of their very own. Please donate and help us to inspire kids to love reading.

Drop off books at any time at the Welcome Desk.
