God’s Love in the Nursery – John Strickland

I was born in Coleman, TX on the floorboard of a car on a very cold December day. After living in many small towns, we moved to Abilene. Because we were not a ‘church-going family,’ I didn’t really grow up knowing a lot about God until I started dating my wife, Kathy.

Over the years, we’ve attended many churches, and we joined Christ United in December, 1997. I had always enjoyed being around the newborns and small children, probably because they accept you for who you are, without pretense. Being with the young ones is a ministry for me. Parents have dedicated spiritual time in worship, while I help to keep their children safe and loved, just as God loves all of us.

You’ve heard that it is better to give than to receive, but I think I receive a lot more than I give to the children and their parents. These little ones are just starting their spiritual journey, and the most important thing I can do for them is model God’s love.

I’m especially happy to see them continue to grow through Children’s Ministries at our church. I get to hold them for such a short time, and I hate to see them leave the nursery and ‘graduate’ to preschool. But I know this: they are loved wherever they land here. Before long, I’m watching them graduate from high school, moving on to adult life, and growing more in their spiritual journey.

I’m just so thankful that God has brought us together, the nursery and me. I’ve been caring for the children here since January, 1998 – that’s a lot of kids! Each and every one of these children help my faith grow, just by allowing me to share love with them. I’m so lucky to be a part of their lives!
